Sanyo ECJ-N55W 5-1/2-Cup Electric Rice Cooker with Porridge/Soup Cooker and Steamer Review

If you eat lots of rice, this is the utilitarian, simplistic, no bells and whistles appliance for you. Contrary to some commentary, it IS easy to clean. The beauty of this appliance is the hands-off rice cooking of ANY rice (I cook mostly brown) that I toss into it. It is not fussy, does not require programming and reliably does the job while I prepare the rest of the meal. The less pot checking I have to do, the more complex and enjoyable I can make the meal. The warming feature keeps the contents just right with no scorching. The simpler the machine, the less can go wrong. The removeable inner pot prevents dropping of rice into the cooking element while serving. Even the included serving spoon fits the pot contours just right and eliminates scratching of the non-stick coating. The only improvements I would make are easier to see fluid level markings on the pot interior (black on black is not the best idea) and an on/off switch, rather than having to pull the plug. Back to the cleaning a moment. Here’s what must be done: wipe the gaskets, remove and swish under water the vent valve and the condensation cup, remove and wash the interior pot. At a snail’s pace this might take five minutes (including drying and replacement) if you stretch it. I use it at least four times a week. Interestingly, those of you who are viewers of Japanese anime may have noticed that a rice cooker looking very similar to this one appears on various episodes. Product placement?

Sanyo ECJ-HC55H 5-1/2-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker, Grey Review

I’m Japanese and I eat rice A LOT, and many people are very picky about rice in general. I used to have a cheap basic rice cooker with bare minimum functions (cooks rice, steam veggie-which I don’t, keep warm), as a result of being a poor student. However I don’t think I will never go back to those basic ones after I experienced how rice should be made and taste using this rice cooker! Really, it’s worth paying for a great rice cooker like this.

My favorite feature is that it makes an excellent short-grain brown rice. I do love white short-grain rice (a.k.a. sushi rice), but I alternate with short-grain brown rice sometimes. Usually, brown rice takes forever to cook, and it’s much drier than short-grain white rice, and it’s hard to eat those non-sticky rice with chopsticks (I can’t separate rice and chopsticks!). But this machine makes the most fluffy and moist brown rice I have ever had! And I just set the timer in the morning, and I never have to wait all night for the brown rice to be cooked! My fiance and roommate were truly surprised with the result too.

I haven’t used the Tofu making function, but I am very excited about that too. It’ll be fun to make fun tofu!
